What is a 'Sing Your Feels' session?
A 'Sing Your Feels' session provides an opportunity to sing an iconic song alongside a load of other beautiful humans for a couple of hours with a live band of top session musicians. No experience is needed! All abilities are welcome. No solos will be forced out of you (unless you want to sing one!)... This is a space free of judgement, free of pressure and full of joy, creativity, harmony and connection.
Most of us know what it's like to sing a song we are so connected with we feel it in our gut. It could be a song about heartbreak (cue Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On') or maybe something more uplifting (hello Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody'). Whether you've been hitting them notes in the shower, at a karaoke night out with your friends or when you're driving home from work, we've all been there! This is a space where you can feel those feels in community... and is often a very powerful experience.
What happens at a 'Sing Your Feels' session? Well, we...
-Warm up our bodies and voices through movement and singing
-Build connection through warm-ups and chat
-Sing through and work on our featured piece
-Unpack the song to explore what the messages are and what it means to us
-Lean into and play with the juicy bits of the song
-Do some super-casual filming of bits of our session so we have some nice momentos to keep for ourselves and to share with those who couldn't make it but may want to join us next time!
In this session we will sing 'Freedom! 90'' by George Michael. With an uplifting choral arrangement, its groove and its powerful message, it is the perfect song for reflecting on how we can live authentically and shake off the winter blues. In My Feels founder Amina Gichinga is cooking up a juicy arrangement of this song and will lead us through it on the day.
The Learning Process:
To get the most out of this session we will send out sheet music and/or audio recordings in a follow-up email after you have booked your ticket. You will receive this roughly a week before the workshop. This way everybody has a chance to learn in a way that feels comfortable to them.
We welcome you to have a listen to the recordings and pick whatever part you like. You definitely do NOT have to learn it perfectly or memorise it off by heart, but it does help to have a look and/or listen. If you have never read sheet music/have struggled with it in the past, there is no pressure to engage with it but you may find it to be a helpful tool if you follow along with the music. We will provide a few copies of the sheet music on the day but do feel free to bring your own as we may not have enough for everyone. We welcome you to sing the part that you are most comfortable with vocally, regardless of your gender.
If you run out of time, it's no biggie because that's the beauty of singing in community - someone will be singing next to you and that's so much easier than learning a part alone! JOY is the priority, NOT perfection.
